Stanley Detar

June 19, 1947 — June 14, 2021

Stanley Jay Detar was taken up to meet his precious Lord and Savior on Monday, June 14, 2021. He was born June 19, 1947, in Southwest Greensburg, to Leonard and Helen Detar. He was predeceased by his father, in 1989; his mother, in 2007; and his sister, Kathleen "Kay," in 1990. Stan graduated from Saint Vincent College in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He received highest honors and was awarded the Academic Excellence in History Award. He also earned a Master's of Education in social studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was a teacher at Greensburg Salem for 33 years, and taught world history, Pennsylvania history, American history, American government and state and local government. Stan was an active member in the Church of Christ, and loved to sing alongside his wife, Bonnie, in local churches, as well as on their radio program, "Song and Verse." A passion throughout his adult life, Stan wrote more than 13,000 inspirational poems to glorify the Lord and to encourage God's people. He was a tennis enthusiast, and loved regularly cruising to the Caribbean with his family. He greatly enjoyed reading history books and historical mystery novels, and you could frequently catch him sketching nature scenes or working on crossword puzzles. Stan was very proud of his daughter, Deirdre, often calling her "brilliant and beautiful," and enjoyed swapping fun facts with his son-in-law, Joel. He adored his good and lovely wife, Bonnie, with whom he recently celebrated 46 years of marriage. Stan is survived by his wife, Bonita "Bonnie"; daughter, Deirdre Detar Cogley; and son-in-law, Joel Cogley. Services will not be open to the public. KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME was trusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Christian Appalachian Project (christianapp.org).
