John Athey

February 17, 1951 — December 16, 2020

John Athey was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior on Dec 16, 2020. He was born in Washington, PA  on Feb 17, 1951. He was the son of the late James Baker Athey and Sarah Evelyn (Cowden) Athey.

He was the President of Ringler Restoration in Greensburg, PA, specializing in church/ historical renovation. In addition to work, his adventurous spirit led him to engage in boating, flying, cooking, operating tools and heavy machinery.

He attended WCCC, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tennessee.

His passion for art was realized early and he excelled at almost any form of creative expression.  This included drawing, painting,  sculpture, woodwork,  photography, stained glass, and design.

John served God throughout his life and considered his work and relationships to be a reflection of his faith.  He was a member of Cornerstone Ministries in Murrysville, PA.

John loved people and fellowship with others. Especially important were his clients, his employees and his family. Some of his most joyous moments were those spent engaged in pillow fights, “stealing” beloved stuffed animals, teasing and general nonsense with his grandchildren and family.

In addition to his wife Janis (Houpt) Athey of 47 years,  he is survived by 3 daughters. Lauren Penrose (Darren), of Greensburg, PA, Katy Doerschner (Chris) of Plum, PA, and Alyson Pumphrey (Christopher) of Front Royal, VA,  grandchildren Carter and Aubrey Penrose, Adelina and Coralyn Doerschner.   He is also survived by a brother James (Ann) Athey of Georgetown, DE  and sister Janet (David) Kramer, of Hickory, PA,  as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation and interment will be private.  Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, Inc., Greensburg is entrusted with arrangements.  A live stream of the service, with Pastor Mark Thomas officiating, will be available by going to Kepple-Graft Funeral Home’s Facebook page at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 21st.  A committal service will follow at the cemetery.

For those interested there will be a celebration of life at a later date TBD.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Cornerstone Ministries, 2200 Cornerstone Lane, Murrysville, PA  15632.
