Carol Ober

Carol (Zehr) Ober, 78, of Mt. Pleasant Township, died peacefully in bed at her farmhouse Friday, Sept. 3, 2021. Carol was born Jan. 7, 1943, in Philadelphia, the daughter of John Howard and Marian Carlotta Zehr. A graduate of North Penn High School and Wilson College, Carol never tired of learning from books, from those around her, and from life itself. While in college, she met her husband of 57 years, Jay Ober. They made their life together and raised their family in the countryside near Greensburg. Carol had a lifelong passion for Medieval English History and art. She combined this with an indomitable spirit and boundless enthusiasm. After a life of devotion to extensive community involvement, she will be remembered for her volunteer contributions to Westmoreland Symphony, the Braddock Trail Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Westmoreland Historical Society and Historic Hanna's Town, Westmoreland Fair Board and Mountain View 4-H club. She traveled extensively with Jay, exploring destinations in North America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia. She also enjoyed hosting students and welcoming families into her home from locations around the globe. Her family and wide circle of friends knew her as a gregarious spirit and optimist with seemingly limitless energy, a keen wit, and a fierce sense of right and wrong. She believed anything was possible and set out to prove it on a daily basis. At home, she passed time in her extensive herb and vegetable gardens, small apple orchard and with the flock of sheep that she and Jay tended and improved together for over three decades. She worked tirelessly to preserve the unique history of her home and earn its acceptance into the national historic register. She was a devoted member of Trinity U.C.C. at 139 N. Main St, Greensburg, for over 50 years. Carol was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Marian Zehr. She is survived by her husband, Jay; son, Dr. John and wife, Katja, of Candor, N.Y.; son, William and partner, Alyse, of Trumansburg, N.Y.; grandchildren, Tristan, Seamus, Kathleen, Norah and Faye; her sister, Sandra Barr and husband, Frank, of New York City; brother-in-law, Charles Ober and wife, Frances, of Greensburg; and extended family in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. She will be missed by many. All who wish to celebrate Carol's life will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at KEPPLE-GRAFT FUNERAL HOME, 524 N. Main St., Greensburg.
