William R. "Bill" Kruth Sr., 83, of Greensburg, passed away October 6, 2026, with family by his side.
Born March 27, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Bill was the son of the late William and Irene Kruth. He grew up in Sharpsburg and Allison Park and attended Duquesne University, where he worked his way through college loading trucks for UPS while participating in the ROTC program.
It was during his college years that Bill met Suzanne E. "Sue" Kruth, who would become his wife and partner for 55 years. They married in 1967 and soon afterward began their life together in South Dakota, Bill's first assignment as an officer in the United States Air Force. He served his country as a Captain, working in personnel and recruiting.
Following his military service, Bill began what would become a nearly 30-year career in the propane industry with Ugite/AmeriGas. He advanced quickly through the company and earned an outstanding reputation within the industry. But professional success was never more important to Bill than family. He strategically accepted positions that brought his growing family closer to Western Pennsylvania and, at times, passed up opportunities for further advancement rather than move away again. He wanted his children to grow up knowing their grandparents, aunts, uncles and extended family - not simply seeing them on occasional visits. He ultimately served as Regional Manager in Greensburg and, in 1976, as President of the Pennsylvania Propane Gas Association. He retired in 2010.
For all that Bill accomplished professionally, family was the measure by which he lived his life.
He and Sue raised four children, William Jr. (Aaron), Christine, Stephen (Sue) and David (Andrea), and Bill took enormous pride in the family they created together. He was the beloved grandfather of Tyler, Kylee, Rachel, Sebastian, Colin, Jackson, Gabrianna and Brooklyn.
Bill was sharp, kind, reserved, selfless and notably soft-spoken. He never needed to be the loudest person in the room - or the center of attention - to make an impression. He was a loving and loyal son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and his quiet nature, intelligence and genuine kindness earned him the affection and respect of those who knew him.
A lifelong Roman Catholic, Bill had been a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg since 1976. His faith remained an important part of his life.
Bill loved golf and played in numerous leagues over the years, but the rounds that meant the most were those played alongside his children and grandchildren. He was also an avid Pittsburgh sports fan, particularly of the Steelers. One especially treasured family memory was watching the Steelers win their sixth Super Bowl in 2009 while surrounded by family in Tampa.
After Sue's death in 2022, Bill's family remained at the center of his world. Some of the simplest moments became some of the most meaningful - lunches at Olive Garden, conversations about life, family and sports, watching The Price Is Right, and simply spending time together. Even as Parkinson's disease and dementia increasingly limited him, the qualities that had defined Bill throughout his life remained evident to those around him. The staff and many residents at Weatherwood came to know and love him as well.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue; his parents, William and Irene; and his sister, Patricia. He is survived by his siblings Kathleen, Richard, Mary Beth, Kenneth and Jeanine, as well as his children, grandchildren and extended family.
Bill died on the morning of October 6 with family beside him. Fittingly, The Price Is Right - a show that had been part of so many mornings spent together - was playing in the room.
A funeral mass for Bill will be celebrated at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 300 North Main Street, Greensburg. Following, at 1 P.M., his cremated remains will be interred with military honors at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
