Washington Gjebre

Washington (Wash) Gjebre, 96 of Greensburg died Sunday, Feb 1, 2026. He was born in Gjirokaster, Albania on Sept. 9, 1929 a son of the late Levzat and Muzejen (Zeko) Gjebre.

He was a proud graduate of East Pittsburgh High School Class of 1948. He was a retired reporter from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette where he had worked for more than 20 years. Before that he worked for over 15 years as a reporter at the Tribune Review, Greensburg.

A 1952 journalism graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Gjebre began his newspaper career at the Daily Messenger in Homestead and also served as editor of the community tabloid of the Forest Hills News and the Squirrel Hill News. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Greensburg where he served as a deacon and elder. He was also a former member of the Greensburg Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the Penn West Conference of the United Church of Christ. Additionally, he volunteered for the Greensburg Meals on Wheels Program and Christian Layman Corp.

Wash is survived by his lovely wife of 73 years, Dorothy Stark Gjebre; son Dr. Keith Gjebre (Lisa) of Greensburg, daughter Beth McConnell (Jeffry) of Hilton Head, SC; two grandchildren, Benjamin Gjebre (Jamie) of Tempe, AZ, Devon Gjebre-Keim (Alex) of Pittsburgh, brother, Paul Gjebre of Pittsburgh and two great-granddaughters, Laina and Adalyn Gjebre and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Freda Zeko.
