Mary Dickie

September 20, 1919 — December 9, 2020

Mary Elizabeth (Sue) Dickie, 101, of Greensburg, PA, passed away on Wednesday, December 9th, 2020 at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg.  Sue was born in Blairsville on September 20th, 1919 to John Clyde Gilmore and Laura Trimble Gilmore.  Sue graduated from Blairsville High School in 1938 and from nursing school at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1941.  She married William C. Dickie in 1942.  Along with home and hospital nursing during World War II, she worked as a nurse at a Federal Laboratory Defense plant. Over the years Bill and Sue lived in Newcastle, PA, Mt. Lebanon, PA, Pittsford, NY, the North Hills of Pittsburgh, and finally settled in Greensburg.      She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Hannastown Golf Club, and was a member and treasurer of Unit IX of Westmoreland Hospital Auxiliary.  Sue was a volunteer for Westmoreland Red Cross Blood Bank for many years, and also at Westminster Church, helping with the Johnstown Red Cross Blood Bank. Sue enjoyed reading, sewing, golf, and playing bridge and other card games.  She played on various bowling leagues over the years and even played on Redstone’s Wi Bowling League, where she bowled a perfect 300 during her final game, helping her team win a Westmoreland County tournament.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; brothers Donald, John C. Jr., William, and James; and sisters Muriel Gilmore Smith, Ethel Gilmore Bixler, Gwendolyn Gilmore Svehla, Jayne Gilmore Foertsch, and Isabel Gilmore Shick of New Jersey.

Sue is survived by her children, William G. Dickie (Barbara) of Dallas, TX, Janice Craft of Lake Worth, FL, Joanne Thompson of Lake Worth, FL, and Thomas E. Dickie of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, as well as her eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her entire family (and their friends) are deeply indebted to her for finding and introducing very special recipes for meatloaf and for Peach Blueberry Cobbler into the family tradition; she is known internationally for these delights.

Sue was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and a good friend and neighbor.  She will be deeply missed.
