Martha Stanton

December 21, 1934 — May 18, 2017

Martha L. Stanton, 82, of Greensburg (Hempfield Township) died Thursday, May 18, 2017 surrounded by her loving family in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.  She was born on December 21, 1934 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Howard J. and Beatrice Shore DeTrude.  She belonged to Otterbein United Methodist Church, Greensburg where she was a member of the chancel choir.  She was a member of SNPJ Lodge #223 where she enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard and playing bocci.  Martha also enjoyed painting, knitting, playing the piano, caring for her many gardens, traveling, making cakes for parties and weddings, and making chocolate and hard tack candy.  She was devoted to her family and was a Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins fan.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Stanton; her son, Richard A. Stanton; 2 brothers, Howard J. DeTrude, Jr. and Edward DeTrude; a sister, Grace Edrie DeTrude.  Martha is survived by her children, James S. Stanton (Donna) of Uniontown, David H. Harbison (Lois), Sherry L. Anthony (Michael),  Julie B. Thomas (Bill),  all of Greensburg, Linda L. Shaffer (Larry) of Latrobe and Paula M. Kowalsky (Jason) of Maine; her grandchildren, James L. Stanton (Erin), Amanda C. Shaffer, Eric D. Harbison, Brett A. Harbison (Molly) and Billy Thomas;  9 great grandchildren; brother in law, Norman Crooks and sister in law, Thelma DeTrude; also, several nieces and nephews and many others who needed a place to stay.  Family and friends will be received on Sunday from Noon-2PM and 5-7 PM at Kepple-Graft Funeral Home, 524 North Main Street, Greensburg.  Martha’s funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 AM in Otterbein United Methodist Church, 111 College Avenue, Greensburg.  Please everyone go directly to the church.  Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park.  For online condolences please visit www.kepplegraft.com.
