Martha Sheehan

March 10, 1931 — August 2, 2017

Martha Ellen Thompson Sheehan entered the Kingdom of Heaven on August 2, 2017 at age 86.  She was born on March 10, 1931 in Middletown, Ohio to Dr. Victor Clyde and Winifred Ellen Moses Thompson.

Ellen was a VERY proud graduate of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Class of 1952. She was awarded her Bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1956.

Ellen spent her life serving others.  She was an incredible mother to her four children Robert (Michelle), Patrick (Elaine), Timothy (Stacey), and Colleen. She was the beloved grandmother of Troy, Lauren (Jason Engler), Erin, and Allison Sheehan, Amber, Janelle, and Kendra Charles, and Shaina Sweeney.  She would’ve been completely smitten with her new great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Engler, born August 26, 2017. They dedicate their lives to honoring hers.

Ellen was a Registered Nurse, retiring from Westmoreland Manor in 1996.  Thereafter, she volunteered for the Red Cross and Hospice.  Her Red Cross duties included assisting victims of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Rita.  Many times, she volunteered as nurse for Pine Springs Camp and Camp Dreamcatcher.  Ellen enjoyed bridge, books, and Buccos (Steelers and Penguins, too.) She was an active member in her church communities in Bethlehem, WV and Greensburg, PA (Westminster and First Presbyterian), especially in the music ministries of choir and bells, and anything Outreach. She served in leadership positions when called to do so. Ellen was also very committed to P.E.O., including a term as President.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, Rev. Robert Sheehan, and brother, Dr. Robert Thompson. She will be mourned by her sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson and Shirley Sheehan, and by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service for Ellen will be held on Saturday, September 9 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 300 South Main Street, Greensburg, PA, 15601.  Memorial tributes may be directed to First Presbyterian Church or the American Red Cross of Chestnut Ridge.
