Laura Scales Wallace passed away peacefully after a long, hard fought battle with cancer on Sunday morning, September 21, 2025 at the age of 67.
Laura was born on September 23, 1957 in Cambridge, MA, to Joan and John Scales. She grew up in Greensburg, PA and graduated from Hempfield High School in 1975. Laura received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Allegheny College in 1979. While at Allegheny, one of the things Laura enjoyed most was her time on the cheerleading squad. She then went on to Syracuse University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1984. Laura lived in Florida for a time, where she began her lifelong career in nursing. While in Florida, she worked as a home health nurse and as an LPN for a dermatologist. Once back in Greensburg, she worked as an LPN for a PCP’s office until she had to give up nursing for medical reasons. Laura was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was a gentle woman with the kindest heart. She loved all holidays, trips to the beach, country inns and all things vintage. Laura was a collector of many things but two of her favorite collections were her hankies and her ribbons. She was a little bit Rock and Roll and a little bit Country. And having the biggest sweet tooth, she wasn’t shy about admitting that one afternoon she drove to two different drive-thrus for vanilla ice cream cones. Laura is survived by her father, John N. Scales, Sr., of Greensburg; her two sisters, Lisa Scales, of Pittsburgh, and Gretchen and her husband Michael Rizzo, of Pittsburgh; her sister-in-law, Cheryl Scales, of Tega Cay; and four nephews and one niece, Michael Rizzo, Brian Rizzo, Andrew Scales, Evan Scales and Elizabeth Scales. She is preceded in death by her mother, Joan Scales and by her brother, John N. Scales, Jr. Family and friends will be received on Sunday, September 28th from 3 to 6pm at the KEPPLE-GRAFT Funeral Home 524 N. Main Street, Greensburg. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, September 29th at 11am at Maplewood Presbyterian Church 108 Woodland Road, Greensburg, PA 15601 with Rev. Stephen M. LaSor officiating. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church for services. Interment will be in Jeannette Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank @give.pittsburghfoodbank.org. For online condolences and information, please visit www.kepplegraft.com.
