Hervey Steiner

December 11, 1937 — May 18, 2017


Hervey A. Steiner, 79, of New Stanton (Hempfield Township), died Thursday, May 18, 2017.  He was born on December 11, 1937, a son of the late Hervey M. and Florence Fox Steiner.  He was a member and elder of the New Stanton Alliance Church where he served as church pianist for many years, served on the church board and taught Sunday school.  He was also a pianist for Grace Baptist Church’s evening services and for the Men’s Bible study at the Presbyterian Church in Irwin.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service beginning in Pittsburgh, transferred to Penn Hills and retired as post master in West Newton.  Upon retirement, he drove school bus for Hempfield Area School District and DMJ.  He was known as the singing bus driver who happily sang Happy Birthday to each child.

He loved music and was a member of the Friday Night Music Club.  He and his wife attended many concerts in the Greensburg and Pittsburgh areas.

Hervey’s deepest passion was for serving the Lord.  He did this by investing his life into his family, extended family, friends and the community.  He was involved for many years with the Hempfield Band.

Loving to travel, he visited all 50 states plus several overseas countries.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 2 sons, Hervey A. Steiner, Jr. and Mark Allen Steiner; also, a great grandson Levi Danka.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eileen L. Smith Steiner; sons, Barry Steiner (Tina) of Greensburg and Craig Steiner (Lisa) of Irvine, KY; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Steiner (Carole) and sister, Vivian Simpson (Don) both of New Stanton.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at New Stanton Alliance Church, 815 South Center Avenue, New Stanton, PA 15672.  Additional visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9:30 AM until the time of Hervey’s funeral service at 10:30 AM.  Interment will follow in Middletown Methodist Church Cemetery.
