Dr. Kun-Hyung “Doc” Kim, 86, of Greensburg, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2018, surrounded by his loving family who adored him. He was born on March 20, 1932 in Korea. He was the son of Myung Whal and Ok Suk Kim, and the oldest son of seven children.
He is a veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the Korean Army as a medical officer with the rank of Captain. He graduated from Korea University Medical School in Seoul, Korea. He came to the United States in August 1963 to continue his straight surgical internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and he completed a two-year surgical residency at Suburban Hospital in Rockville, Maryland. He completed his orthopedic residency at Martland Hospital Center, School of Medicine at NJ Medical School. He practiced orthopedics at Columbus Hospital in Newark, NJ, and eventually established his practice in Pennsylvania at Brownsville General Hospital and Waynesburg Hospital until he retired in 1995.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg for over 30 years. He loved hearing and watching his wife sing in the choir. Also, he was a member of Ligonier Country Club and enjoyed playing golf and tennis with his wife. He worked with diligence and concentration in his garden and yard at home, and although not generally into extreme sports, to his wife’s horror, was discovered one day in his 70s walking on the roof trying to repair something. He traveled extensively throughout his life to many locations around the world, including Russia, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, several other countries in Europe, South Africa (where he celebrated his 80thbirthday with his family), Korea, Japan, Canada, Fiji Islands, Australia and New Zealand. He adored his granddaughter and loved playing with her and watching her grow and laugh with him. He loved listening to classical music and opera, and also loved hearing Chopin’s Fantasie Impromptu, Etude and Nocturnes performed on the piano by his daughter, who says he was her biggest fan and only groupie. He loved receiving friends at home, who added spice and laughter to his life. We will miss his bright, smiling eyes and face saying good morning and hello, his colorful stories, his gentle character and presence, and his comforting tenderness. The family is grateful to all of those who supported us with loving prayers, cheerful visits and kind support throughout his illness.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Chung-Hae Kim, whom he adored and to whom he was married for 59 years; his son, Dr. Ian (Jill) Kim, a physician in North Carolina; his grandchild, Collins Kim; his daughter, Amy, a lawyer who has practiced in London, England and Los Angeles; his sister, Dr. Eun Sun Kim, a physician in Korea; his brother, Tae Hyun Kim in Korea; and several nephews and nieces.
The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a contribution in Doc’s name may do so to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensburg Memorial Fund (300 South Main Street, P. O Box 1038, Greensburg, PA 15601) in memory of Dr. Kun-Hyung Kim.
